Math: Measurement Communication

My Hands Are My Ruler

Use your kiddo's hand length to create a "ruler" to measure objects around the house.

Instructions

Get Ready

Gather the following materials. We've linked to our suggested choices, but feel free to substitute!

Practice New Skills

Trace your kiddo’s hand on a piece of paper. Repeat, as desired, so that the hand tracings form one continuous line, 1 to 5 hand lengths long. Demonstrate how to measure household items using this hand ruler. Then help your tot measure, too!

Investigate

Describe the steps your tot is taking. Talk about what is happening, and/or why it might be happening. Help your tot make predictions and test ideas.

  • You’re holding your very own hand ruler! This is how long one of your hands is. This is how long two of your hands is…
  • Let’s find some things to measure with your hand ruler. What did you find?
  • You are measuring it with your hand ruler. Is it as long as one hand? Two?
  • What if you put your foot on your hand ruler? Do you think your foot will be longer or shorter than one hand? Oh, look, your foot is longer than your hand!
  • How many hands long is a book?
