Investigating Bird Parts

View photos or models of birds. Point to their parts and/or say the names of their parts (feathers, beak, wings, feet). Investigate feathers (store-bought) using a magnifying glass.

Instructions

Get Ready

Gather the following materials. We've linked to our suggested choices, but feel free to substitute!

Practice New Skills

Take a look at a picture or toy model of a bird. Point to a part (feather, beak, wings, feet) and say its name. Support your tot in identifying bird parts by pointing or talking. Next, take out a bird feather and demonstrate how to look at it under a magnifying glass. Encourage your tot to try. Then follow your tot’s lead, and support her play.

Investigate

Describe the steps your tot is taking. Talk about what is happening, and/or why it might be happening. Help your tot make predictions and test ideas.

  • You are using a magnifying glass to see the feather differently.
  • What does the feather look like with the magnifying glass? Without?
  • How might feathers be helpful to birds?
  • What else should we look at with the magnifying glass?
